Happy April Fools' Day
Thus, would-be nancies.org users found, beginning at 12:01am on April 1st, that their beloved Dave Matthews Band website was gone. In its place was a website that featured not one but two photographs of young pop star John Mayer (or "JM," as we called him), and explained that nancies.org would no longer be a website about Dave Matthews Band, but would now about Mayer; the site even said that "[Mayer is] exactly what Dave Matthews Band was like in the early 1990s, before they sold out."
The e-mail started immediately, and poured in, uninterrupted, for the 15.25 hours that the faux nancies.org remained in place. (The fact that anybody managed to find the tiny e-mail link, intentionally embedded in the copyright text at the bottom of the page, is surprising in itself.) Just a shade under 1,000 messages were sent in all, or just over one per minute.
The e-mail broke down into three groups:
"I hate you. Die." | 50% |
"April Fools'!" | 40% |
"Good. Mayer is better." | 10% |
As a sample of the "I Hate You" category, we have "Jeremy," who wrote:
"you guys suck. f*** you all, there is a special spot in hell reserved for you motherf***ers. I Love Dave. Dave is going to kill you motherf***ers in your sleep. F*** you John Mayer. F*** you in your stupid a**. you guys eat sh**."(Some contents censored, of course.) This is more or less typical of comments from the "I Hate You" category.
