DMB to Receive NAACP Award

NAACP chairman Julian Bond (who happens to be a resident of Charlottesville) has announced that Dave Matthews Band will receive the organization's distinguished Chairman's Award for "distinguished service and dignified representation of people of color." "Dave Matthews and the Dave Matthews Band demonstrated what commitment means in an artist---with their music and their generosity, they have made a difference in the lives of many," said Julian Bond. "To see and hear them is to recognize great talent; to learn of their good deeds is to recognize they are good souls." Despite the fact that three -- or debatably, four -- members of the band are African-American, they receive little acknowledgment from the black community, making this recognition somewhat overdue. Thanks to Amber Zinni for the heads-up.
