I actually attended this show to see Big Head Todd and the Monsters. The radio station in Sacramento who promoted the show, advertised the show and Big Head Todd being the headliner and DMB being the opening act..We were so excited to have gotten tickets in the 6th row..To our dismay when we arrived and were standing outside the door that lead to our 6th row seats while the attendant checked our tickets to make sure we really were suppose to be up front, we heard Big Head Todd and the monsters playing already (we were fashionably late as usual, the opeing act wasn't a band we really knew..who was DMB anyways?? Our local radio station was only playing "what would you say" for about 3 weeks at that point). We were mad, why are they playing already I asked the attendant looking at my ticket, because, he responded, they are the opening band..We were pissed and shocked, back then spending $35.00 on a concert ticket was quite a bit, and to spend it to see a band I didn't know?? I was angry to say the least..The ticket also showed BHT&M in big bold letters implying they were the headliner, with DMB in little letters underneath, again implying they were the opening act. I still have the ticket to prove my memory serves me correctly here!
So after a few cocktails during the "intermission" we decided to get our monies worth and go in and watch the band do the one song we knew..We opened the door and were completely blown away. From the huge Firedancer backdrop and all the little twinkle lights all around their stage, we were amazed..Musically, it was nothing like I had heard before..Who was the crazy guy on the violin?? How can he play like that..My pal and I had never seen anyone play the violin like that before..How can Dave dance and sing like that all night long?? We knew none of their other songs and all I remember is not being able to sit in my seat for very long as the music moved me to want to shake my ass!! I remember turning around to look at the auditorium of people behind me and for as far back as I could see on the floor and everyone up in the balcony, the entire place was dancing..And no one knew really who they were(we are on the west coast for heaven sake! the DMB grass roots movement hadn't quite made it here),but we loved every note we heard..I was instantly hooked on the upbeat positive music I heard that night, I was instantly a fan for life..I immediately spread the word the next day, telling friends and family to run out and buy this CD, under the table and dreaming(as I had the next day) and bought tickets to see them play 3 months later in Berkeley where not only could I dance to their live performance again, but I could sing along to the songs this time as well..Thanks to whoever promoted the show and getting me there under false pretenses, it was by far the best unexpected headliner band I had ever seen..Oh and have ever seen since!!
